HYUNDAI IN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA

Hyundai’s roots in Sub-Saharan Africa stretch back over three decades – from early Pony exports to Liberia, to local assembly in Botswana in the 1990s, and the formation of Hyundai Automotive South Africa in 2000 (including local truck assembly in Gauteng).
Today, Hyundai serves customers through an extensive dealership and aftersales network across Southern Africa – including South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique – underscoring a long-term commitment to the region.

1947

Roots in Industry

Hyundai Engineering & Construction is founded by Chung Ju-yung, laying the groundwork for Hyundai Group. “Hyundai” means “modern times,” signaling a vision for progress.

1967

Birth of Hyundai Motor Company

Hyundai Motor Company is established, beginning its journey in automotive manufacturing.

1968

First Steps

Production starts with the Ford Cortina, assembled under license - an important stepping stone in manufacturing capability.

1975

Korea’s First Car

The Hyundai Pony becomes Korea’s first mass-produced and exported car (Giugiaro styling). It debuts in Canada in 1984, marking Korea’s first car export.

1986

Breakthrough in the U.S.

Hyundai enters the American market with the Excel, quickly popular and introducing the brand to millions.

1991

Engineering Independence

Hyundai develops its first proprietary engine and transmission, achieving full technological independence.

1998

Partnership with Kia

Hyundai Motor Group acquires a major stake in Kia Motors, creating one of the world’s largest automotive groups.

2000

Global Expansion & SUVs

The Santa Fe launches as Hyundai’s first SUV, quickly becoming a best-seller and anchoring Hyundai in the SUV market.

2004

Global Recognition

Hyundai is ranked among the Top 100 global brands, reflecting rising quality and reputation.

2008

Luxury Ambitions

Hyundai introduces the Genesis luxury sedan (NA Car of the Year 2009), paving the way for the Genesis brand.

2012

Motorsport & Design

The bold Veloster and renewed focus on WRC underscore Hyundai’s growing performance credentials.

2013

Fuel Cell Leadership

Launch of the ix35 Fuel Cell, the world’s first mass-produced hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle.

2015

Genesis Becomes a Brand

Hyundai establishes Genesis as an independent luxury brand competing with the world’s premium automakers.

Electric & Future Mobility

All-electric Kona EV earns global awards for affordability and range; Hyundai also expands into robotics and urban air mobility.

Carbon Neutrality Pledge
